Communication on science and technology, on ongoing research activities, their results and possible applications is a complex task. The main challenge is to identify the many information sources, extract the required content and bring this together into an appropriate presentation or teaching programme. It is an extra benefit if actual contacts between scientists and target audiences can be organised. Many different activities have been undertaken that provide partial solutions and often have a regional focus.
The ComScience project initiative has been designed and funded by the EU Commission to provide a European oriented support system for science communicators. ComScience will also analyse its own services, by organising public events in different European countries and perform evaluations on the effectiveness of materials and methods provided and present a report on best practices. In the menu on this page, five different science subjects are listed for which extensive Science Information Packs (SIPs) have been produced. The packages contain the following items:
- a short introductory film
- a meeting handout
- a background document
- Frequently Asked Questions
- a Glossary
- a list of FP6 / FP7 funded research projects
- a meeting handout

The SIPs can be freely used, copied and distributed for any of the following:
- as a muster for any other science subject
- for public meetings introducing one of the science subjects covered
- for specialised parties, such as patient groupings
- for preparing classroom lessons
