[1] What is the purpose of this website? -^-
The European Science Education Media initiative has been built around three EU sponsored activities. The MREFS project is a Life Science Specific Support Action (LS-SSA, FOOD-9: 2002-T0), funded during FP6 in the thematic area 'Food Quality and Safety'. The EMRS project is a similar project (LS-SSA, LSH-2002-3-6), funded during FP6 in the thematic area 'Genomics and Biotechnology for Health'. The Risk Network is the third FP6 activity funded through the Science and Society Programme (SOCIETY-3.1 Public understanding and confidence, proposal #513310) This website presents all results and ongoing activities.
[2] What are the EUSEM projects about? -^-
The EMRS, MREFS and RISK-network projects produce short films on life science research projects that are funded through the European Framework Programme 6. The films are made available on this website for viewing or off-line usage. High quality copies are made available for use in education programmes and original footage can be requested by broadcasters or film producers. The 'Rapid Response Science Network' support the available films by answering questions that may come up among users.
[3] What can be seen in the films? -^-
The films are shot at location, therefore scientists explain what they are doing and what can be expected from their work. Life Sciences is a broad field of research and includes medical research, pharmaceuticals, as well as plant breeding, agriculture and food production. Selected subjects of the films answer questions ranging from: 'how does it work' or 'is it safe to ...' or 'can biotechnology solve world problems?' as well as: 'when is this new technology available?'.
[4] Can the films be viewed or be used off-line? -^-
Yes, several films have been made available from this website through a streaming server. Also film materials can be ordered to be used for other purposes. Please contact EUSEM for details.
[5] What background materials are available? -^-
A range of sources are on offer: these FAQs, a science section on filmed projects, educational materials (in preparation), a discussion board, a rapid response network and links to other sites of interest.
